University of Montenegro – the coordinator
The University of Montenegro (UoM) is the oldest and the largest higher education, scientific and artistic institution in Montenegro. UoM was founded in 1974, in Podgorica. Today, the University is comprised of 19 faculties and 3 scientific institutes, with more than 20,000 students. The headquarters and main campus of the University are in Podgorica, with other campuses located in seven other Montenegrin cities – Nikši?, Cetinje, Kotor, Herceg Novi (Igalo), Bar, Bijelo Polje, and Berane.
The University of Montenegro is an integrated public university, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Declaration, with curricula harmonized with those at the most respectable European universities. This, as well as numerous agreements and programs in which the University takes part, enables mobility without barriers in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) for students, teachers, and administrative staff. The University of Montenegro has signed more than 130 bilateral agreements on cooperation with universities from 35 countries worldwide.
Studies at the University of Montenegro are organized at the level of undergraduate, master, and doctoral studies. The University is continuously engaged in the restructuring and modernizing of all study programs and their harmonization with modern achievements and the labor market needs.
For years the University of Montenegro has participated in the EU funded projects, either in the capacity of a partner or the coordinating institution – over 50 projects funded under the Tempus program, over 15 Erasmus Mundus Action 2 projects for student mobility, several projects under FP7 funding scheme or IPA supported projects, Erasmus + CBHE and International credit mobility projects and other. The projects tackled various issues related to higher education reform and harmonization of our higher education system with the EHEA – be it through curricula reform or introduction of new study programs, but also capacity building and structural reforms introducing new instruments, procedures, and systems on lifelong learning. The area covered in this project will be comprised of two university units. Faculty of Maritime Studies Kotor, a part of the University of Montenegro that has 60 years of tradition in educating students in different maritime fields, as well as in the training of professional seafarers. The faculty itself has extensive experience of participating in and coordinating EU co-financed projects including programs such TEMPUS and ERASMUS + CBHE. The second unit, the Institute of marine biology was founded in 1961 in Kotor and it is the only Montenegrin institution for scientific investigation, control, and protection of the sea. Core competencies lie in the comprehensive research of the marine and coastal area, which has its wide impact on the environmental protection and prevention of those areas. It has very good experience in the research of different aspects of the marine ecosystem such as marine fisheries (small scale and professional fisheries), aquaculture development, seawater quality, seawater chemistry, zoobentos, and phytobentos community. Institute has very well-equipped laboratories and has been established a strong international cooperation network through participation in numerous EU co-financing projects (IPA, HERD, COST, etc).
